We are glad to report that Kyle has successfully crossed the finish line Tuesday officially at 13:53 and today at 14:34.
Expecting severe weather conditions on the first day of the walk (20th), the organizers of the walk decided to have the participants start one hour and a half earlier than usual. Kyle had to leave our foster family’s home (still the wonderful Nijmeegse couple, Co and Marianne) at 6:00 in the morning to try and evade the extreme heat of the sun (from 13:00 – 16:00).
The temperature (33 degrees) was exactly the same as in 2006 when the heat proved to be fatal to two participants. Because of this very unfortunate fact, the Walk of the World was stopped altogether. This time around, the organizers were really prepared, preventing any severe untoward incidents from happening. Still 1154 participants were not successful in crossing the finish line.
It was a relatively cooler day today but the humidity was rather high, making the walk still rather tiring. About 1243 further gave up on their walk today. But Kyle still came home in high spirits!
Kyle is determined to finish the whole 120 kms. by Friday, 23 July, and hopes to be able to gather a total of 3,000 Euros to help more orphans this year. We are confident that with your help, we can all contribute to providing more support to these children whose parents were victims of either Extrajudicial Killings (EJK) or enforced disappearances in the Philippines.
Kyle and his father, Boyen (who accompanied and supported him during the walk) were interviewed by RTL-Utrecht TV: http://mediaplayer.rtvutrecht.nl/stream/6ad48d42.wmv
Again, thank you for everyone’s support!
